Riding the White Rapids of Conflict

I'm no white water rafter but I have seen movies like The River Wild and aside from Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon outstanding performances, they moved through the process of conflict both on the raft and off.Last Friday evening I kicked off an intensive program on Conflict Management at Granite State College. Just before I left, I updated my status on facebook with this pending activity. Saturday morning, when I went online, I found that a few people commented "I could use a course like…See More

Excuse codes? I picked this up from one of my clients. He's a Division Leader of one of the world's largest high tech firms. He simply put it this way..."I can't stand excuse codes." The two of us had fun with examples such as:"I can't.""That won't work."" I think it will be too risky.""I called him…See More

Coaching: A Competency for Executives

Just the other day, I had a conversation with an executive of a 300 employee organization. His biggest challenge: the performance management systems/process seemed punitive. After asking him more about it and later engaging the human resources professional in the conversation, we determined that the process / system they had was transactional.Employees would go in with the question:"Is my job safe?""Will my manager have anything positive to say about me?""Will my manager demonstrate that s/he…See More

Chuck Sink commented on Deb Titus's blog post 'Would Dale Carnegie Condone Injustice?'
Deb, The wisdom and depth of your answer will enrich the understanding of those who would otherwise reflexively lash out at "injustice." Carnegie was remarkably pragmatic even when his advice seemed counter-intuitive or against the…

Would Dale Carnegie Condone Injustice?

Earlier today, on my personal facebook page, I made a few references to Dale Carnegie's first human relations principle: "Don't criticize, condemn or complain." Then the question came from one of my friends: "What should you do when you see an injustice being done to someone else."First off, I like to think of the principle as a great option for achieving justice. When there is an injustice being done to someone else, I suggest it's important not to create a stream of defensiveness as that would…See More

Authentically Collaborate and Win!

Sometimes you can’t win unless you collaborate!

It’s important to recognize how this can propel you closer to your goals. It’s also important to recognize that in the process of collaboration no one is left to experience the sensation of losing.

There are many business leaders who are so focused on the win, they fail to realize just how collaborating can progress their goals.

They fail to see this because they…
