Should You Stay or Should You Go?

On the job stress has taken on new meaning in this economy. Most people with a job are doing the work of 2 to 5 people, it seems. The workload is heavy, and the pressure to perform can feel enormous. Still, the question I get most frequently is from people who are pressing for a raise or promotion for all the extra work they are doing. It is a question I can’t answer: should I stay or should I go?Despite the current economy, and despite watching their colleagues getting pink slips, these busy…See More

Do Self Help Books Really Help?

Do “self-help” books really help? In short, yes. The key is sorting through all the titles to find the book or books that will be relevant and meaningful to you. What is meaningful and helpful for one person may not be for another. Also, people have different learning styles, which is another reason why one size (book) doesn’t fit all. What should you expect from a self-help book? What I advise people to expect is that as much as 75% of the book you pick may not feel “enlightening” or “relevant”…See More

I hear ya, Steve. Us "natives" find the media amusing. This is evidently a storm "blitz," a new term for me. I'm just psyched it's ski snow :)

Heidi, Great post. Do you think another reason for the staff's minor mistake may be the protocol itself? Without knowing the specific details, I think the next step may be for the staff and supervisor to go over the protocol together to…

Lose Big! (Money, that is)

Recently, I was given an astounding demonstration of how the breakdown of communication and low morale in the workplace can lose companies money. Big money in this scenario. That is if you consider well in excess of a million dollars big money. So, what happened? An employee didn’t do the checks and balances of protocol, and by missing a minor detail, the company had to eat a big loss. What I was told next is incredible to me: this isn’t the first time this employee, or others in this…See More

Brockovich: A Symbol of Hope During Catastrophe

What great timing for a grand reminder about the difference one person can make. On June 11th, the New Hampshire Women’s Leadership Summit was held in Nashua and featured Erin Brockovich as the keynote speaker. My biz partner, Deb and I, were fortunate enough to speak at the Summit and then see Brockovich speak.Due to her incredible conviction and great dislike of deceit and injustice, Brockovich persevered and achieved an amazing feat. She and Ed Masry, a principle at the law firm she worked…See More

Stress and the "Mean Boss"

More and more, I continue to hear about people exasperated over the amount of stress their boss is putting on them, and comments to the effect of “I don’t know if I can take it anymore,” or “He’s really being a jerk.”When I ask them if they’ve always experienced their boss like this, most say that their boss is usually super nice, or that their boss is not typically very verbal, but has become increasingly demanding and doesn’t want to hear excuses. The faces of the people I’m talking with are…See More

Technology: One Size Does Not Fit All

We are inundated with messages all the time about how to sell and market to customers, or how to train employees using various mediums. Much of the messaging today is about saving time and money using….what else? Technology. Twitter this, Facebook that, webinar this, etc. There is certainly a convenience factor and perhaps a cost savings factor to many of today’s technologies. But there is an aspect here that is not being factored into the equation: learning styles.I use the phrase, “One size…See More

Reflections of a New Hampshire Snowy Day

It’s a snowy day in New Hampshire and I am having a rare moment of being able to sit and watch the birds flock to my feeder. There are the usual breeds, the Chickadee and the Tufted Titmouse. The Cardinal couple is here, the male at the peak of his red splendor against the white background of snow. The Downy Woodpecker is doing his usual comic routine of trying to feed from a feeder not meant for the grip of his feet and claws, but always managing to overcome the obstacle and maneuver his way…See More
