Being Employed and Your Career Development

During the Recession it is typical to think that concern about one's career development is reserved for the unemployed and under-employed among us. Much of my blogging in recent months has been directed toward those cohorts. However, it's important to also focus on the individual career development needs of the 90+% of Americans who are fully employed. Addressing career development in the context of employee inclusion in companies and organizations raises a set of different issues and… Continue

NHBR Network. Welcome to the new world.

The NHBR Network page was stagnant on the screen at our booth at the Tri-City Expo in Manchester Thursday, because we couldn’t get an internet connection. Frozen like a newspaper page, or a painting at the museum.

Yet the Network represents something that is fluid, that you can interact with, that you can meet people through. Writing used to be like this, only all so slow. One slide at a time.. On paper. You read it. You responded in a letter. You wrote letters to all… Continue

Engagement - What does it mean to your business?

It's not a ring on a finger! Artifacts and physical symbols are nice to have yet when closely examined, the business that has the most engaged employees and engaged clients are the ones that have achieved alignment of values, goals and explicit expectations and commitment to move in the same direction. These are the organizations that achieve alignment without the ring. These are the organizations that transcend compliance and truly engage in… Continue

TriCity Expo — Come For The Booths, Stay For The Networking

The 21st Annual TriCity Expo, hosted by the Manchester, Concord, and Nashua Chambers of Commerce, will be held today, Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Radisson Hotel Expo Center, Manchester. This annual business-to-business expo features over 200 exhibitors from all over the state, and welcomes over 2,000 attendees. The hours of the Expo are 3 to 7 p.m.

I am a veteran of six TriCitys (or is it TriCities?) and my favorite part is seeing what companies come up with for booths. Yes, there’s a… Continue

An Apology for Kate Alterman

9/20/09—An Apology for Kate Alterman

I was first introduced to Kate Alterman during law school, though I didn’t know her name for many years. She was an immigrant girl who worked in the factories of New York. It was her work in a particular factory that eventually brought Kate into contact with Max Steuer, one of the most famous trial lawyers of her time. The event that brought Steuer and Alterman together was the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire that occurred on March 25,… Continue

A GIFTED RANT

After listening to Laura Knoy’s recent radio show (http://www.nhpr.org/node/27017)

on NHPR (not to be confused by our beloved NHBR) featuring advocates of continued spending on “gifted” education, I had to either call in and scream, or shut it off. Given that my “gifted” kid is scheduled to babysit for her (probably also gifted) kids tomorrow, I figured I better turn the dial.

Now I have three kids…one was in Special Ed, one is straight down the middle average academically (though she… Continue

Four Funerals and a Wedding

The sad news is the headline is true. My husband and I have endured the deaths of three close relatives and our beloved kitty of 19 years — all within the last six months. On the brighter side, we are anticipating the wedding of the daughter of one of our closest friends next month.

All these rites of passage really gave us a good, swift kick in the posterior to take care of our humble but slowly growing estate. Well, “estate” sounds so Thurston Howell III, but you know what I… Continue

Which Profile Fits You?

So, how are you handling the tough employment times? I encourage you to think about which profile fits you.

Type 1

You're out of work, desperately wanting back in, north of forty years old, and the only job search techniques that you know are from when you were nineteen years old. That means that you're checking the newspaper classifieds and in an attempt to keep up with the times, you're also checking a couple of online job boards. Your family and friends know that you're… Continue

Six Sets of Questions to Ask Yourself (if you dare)

Many of my early working years were spent misguided by my own assumptions. I passed by obvious wealth-building opportunities without recognizing them. I blindly continued to struggle needlessly. Today I apply the brakes and change course when I’m heading in the wrong direction.

Here is a vital piece of advice for you if you feel stuck in neutral or missing out on the success of which you are worthy:

"If someone is going down the wrong road, he doesn't need motivation to… Continue

When "Do It Yourself" To Be Lean Costs More

I went to a mid-sized, long established and successful company yesterday that is implementing a lean initiative culture. This is a great system for taking 3 seconds off a production line function or for creating a work flow environment that eliminates steps and wasted time.

About a month ago, the upper level management team decided to use the lean approach to learn about the strengths of each manager on the team, and then how to communicate more effectively in the workplace. The… Continue

September 2009 NH JobReport

Here’s the September 2009 Job Report, brought to you by JobsInNH.com. Each month, I’ll take a look at the labor market data we collect as the state’s leading employment website. This month, we’ll take a look at some key data points that illustrate a slow recovery during the second quarter. It’s also beginning to look like June will represent the bottoming out of the labor market in New Hampshire.

Let’s start by taking a look at the August state wide job posting numbers. At… Continue

Socially Responsible and Sustainable Business Practices: Mandates or Just Doing the Right Thing?

I paused before I posted this. It's September 11, 2009, eight years after the most disastrous attack on America ever. It is a solemn day of remembrance and prayer. I questioned whether to wait until posting my first to this blog but then I thought about how so many sacrificed so that the rest of us can continue daily pursuing our dreams. I will indeed remember our lost country men and women. God bless America.

The following article may start out sounding like a sermon but it is more… Continue

It’s After Labor Day -- Do You Know Where Your White Clothes Are?

Yes, I still wear white after Labor Day.

First of all, white’s just a color like any other, so why exclude it. You wear black in summer to some degree, don’t you?

Now, I must admit, I might not put on an all-white suit, primarily because I don’t tan well — you wouldn’t be able to see where I end and the suit begins.

I usually pair my After-Labor Day white with a saturated color, like black, navy (without looking too nautical) or more fall colors like brown,… Continue
