Fall is, in fact, THE BEST TIME for planting! Proven the most effective time of year to plant shrubs, trees, bulbs and certainly the best time to re-seed a lawn, start a new lawn or lay down sod. Plantings from September through late October in northern areas are treated to a less stressful environment with:

generally sufficient rains
moderate temperatures
mild days followed by cool nights

Soil temperatures are optimal for root growth and will continue to grow even after plants drop their foliage (if they're deciduous) well into the November and later, before the ground freezes. You'll see fewer plant losses attributed to lack of acclimation to the cold than a landscape installed in the spring when plantings run a higher risk of loss due to the summer's heat and dryness.

With the heat we have been experiencing this summer comes high levels of algae in our local lakes. This is causing problems in lake-fed irrigation systems. Some problems we are seeing are clogged filters, hung valves and poor pressure at the spray heads. When this occurs, you will have inadequate water coverage to lawn areas and lack of water to planting beds with drip irrigation. This issue may also cause pumps to lose their prime or pressure systems to experience frequent pump cycling, which may lead to pump failure. We are asking that you monitor your lake-fed irrigation system regularly, sometimes as often as weekly, to try and avoid costly repairs.
