The Seabrook Nuclear Power Station was wrapped in controversy during its construction and as it began operations in 1990. Now as the plant applies for relicensing, with Japan’s reactor crisis still fresh in people’s minds, some are again questioning nuclear energy’s role in the Granite State.

New Hampshire’s hospitals are fighting a double-headed dragon of rising costs and decreased government reimbursements, which may drop even further as the Legislature contemplates more reductions in the budget. Bob Sanders asks Granite State hospitals how they are going to cope with already razor-thin margins.

Nearly 70 years ago, the world’s greatest political and financial minds of the day convened at the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, holding discussions that led to the formation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Once again the landmark property has hosted economic strategists at the recent Institute for New Economic Thinking Conference to discuss macroeconomics in a world still feeling the after-effects of a global recession. NHBR contributor and financial advisor Tom Sedoric was there and shares his observations.

Hospitals are also featured in our Going Green section. Telegraph science editor David Brooks explores what one Nashua hospital is doing to keep kitchen scraps out of the landfill by turning them into compost. It’s a movement that is gaining ground among health institutions that feed hundreds, even thousands, of patients and staff each day.

Baker Hill Golf Club in Newbury has been named the Best Course in New Hampshire for an impressive fifth time by Golf Digest magazine. In our Q&A feature, Cindy Kibbe spoke with Baker Hill pro Mark Aston and board member Jim Jankowski about the honor and where the future of the game is going.

The spotlight is on Merrimack Valley in NHBR’s special section. Kathleen Callahan finds all that is ‘goodgood’ in Manchester, talking with the creators of a very unique community social site that is quickly gaining a reputation for putting the Queen City on the map.

Also in focus in the next issue of NHBR is Manchester Small Business Week, May 16-20. Hosted by the Manchester Economic Development Office, the inaugural event has workshops, conferences and activities designed to recognize small businesses for their contributions to the community and to provide them with information and resources to help them grow and thrive.

In our Minding Your Business section, Bill Ryan explains the finer points of dealing with work history gaps on your resume. Find out what you should – and shouldn’t – say. Paul Boynton, of “Begin With Yes,” and financial planner Donald Sommese also contribute along with others.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and other once-and-future prez hopefuls find themselves sitting squarely in the sites of NHBR’s own Flotsam & Jetsam.

You’ll find all these articles and more in the next issue of NHBR, in print and online at www.nhbr.com, Friday, May 6.
