Performance Management for Small Business

The most to gain and typically the least amount of resources

Lets face it, a Balanced Scorecard for small businesses represents a tremendous competitive edge but, takes skilled resources to design and implement effectively. Where does the small business get these resources?
First, as a colleague of mine loves to point out, the small business owner needs the vision to recognize the significance and potential ROI. Second, they need the courage to transform their hobby into a business with accountability. Simple measurements that are clearly documented and understood by an entire organization are typically the difference between any objective or goal and the level of attained achievement. For example: the small business owner that complains about having to baby sit employees will see a leap in performance and accountability by defining in simple terms the authorization level and responsibilities associated with a function and the simple measurements that are deployed to keep everyone focused on business objectives. It is not rocket science to establish key performance indicators (KPI's) for the business, organization, function and employee. The best part is along with a solid marketing a sales plan it differentiates the business from a hobby competitively. Done right, a small business owner has no greater ROI opportunity.
