Technology: One Size Does Not Fit All

We are inundated with messages all the time about how to sell and market to customers, or how to train employees using various mediums. Much of the messaging today is about saving time and money using….what else? Technology. Twitter this, Facebook that, webinar this, etc.
There is certainly a convenience factor and perhaps a cost savings factor to many of today’s technologies. But there is an aspect here that is not being factored into the equation: learning styles.

I use the phrase, “One size does not fit all,” because this is what I hear the messaging say: “Adapt, or you’ll be left behind.” And, you know what? They’re correct!

Everyone does not share the same thinking processes. While one person may be an auditory processor, another may need hands on training with a live instructor. Self study, on-line courses work great for some learners, while for others, it’s the equivalent of blindfolding them and setting them up for failure.

We seem to have empathy and understanding about differing learning styles when it comes to children. The reality is, were just big kids, with the same learning style we were born with. Most adults have made adaptations, but it will be a self-defeating world that leaves behind hundreds of thousands who simply cannot “adapt” because their learning style doesn’t match popular culture.

So, embrace technology and the many means of how it lends itself to selling, marketing, training……….but be aware……there’s a segment of the population out there who you won’t reach without the human connection behind the message.
