This Ad is Not Appearing on Super Bowl Sunday (and it's not the one you think!)

The Super Bowl is this coming Sunday... or haven't you heard? The political news of the day seems to have crowded out the sports section lately, so you could be forgiven if this particular item has slipped past your attention. In fact, I heard it opined today that senator-elect (and Cosmo model turned action figure) Scott Brown might get more air time this week than Colts All-Pro quarterback (and ubiquitous shill) Peyton Manning.

What does this say about the state of our nation? Depending on whom you ask, we may finally have priorities straight, or we're in worse shape than we thought!

Moreover, whatever press the Super Bowl has been able to garner has been dominated less by the two teams, and less by the many advertisers who ponied up the $5+ million per minute, but more by one ad that will not be airing, and another spot that some feel shouldn't be.

No doubt you've heard by now that an anti-abortion ad will air during the biggest sporting event of the year, while a commercial for a gay dating web site will not darken TV screens the world over.

What this says about the state of our union -- not to mention CBS's Standards and Practices department -- is also to be determined, depending on your perspective.

But getting far less attention is another ad that won't be shown during the Super Bowl. No, the spot wasn't censored by CBS. Advertising a very popular beverage, this well-produced ad features pro football footage and a classic Bob Dylan tune. And it's not a fly-by-night company either; this publicly-traded firm has advertised during the Super Bowl for 23 consecutive years.

Intrigued? Even more interesting, in a bold strategic move, the company has decided to shift its marketing dollars away from the Super Bowl and into... philanthropy? Yep. In fact, by combining cause marketing and crowdsourcing with the latest social media tools, this company may be onto something big.

The company? Pepsi. Watch the ad I fully expected to run during the game, and read more about cause marketing on my blog: The Campbell Scoop.

Oh, and meanwhile, enjoy the game! Go Saints!

I'll blog my favorite Super Bowl ads -- and those that fumbled the ball -- next Monday.
